Myth: Real Estate Agents Get Kickbacks or Say Anything to Make a Sale: The Truth Buyers and Sellers Need, from JJ Herrera

I hear it all the time.

People want to know if they can trust their real estate agent. Some of it is healthy skepticism. But some of it comes from myths that spread faster than the truth ever does. One of the biggest misconceptions in real estate is that agents receive kickbacks behind closed doors or that we’ll say anything just to make a sale.

So let me clear this up the way I always do:

Straight & Honest.

I got into this business to build wealth for families, businesses, and investors: Not myself at someone else’s expense. My name is my contract. My integrity is my currency. That matters more than any commission check ever could.

You’re Asking the Wrong Question

What you really want to know is: can an agent put my goals above their own?

That’s a fair question. You deserve an answer that doesn’t dance around the truth.

In the U.S. real estate industry, a real estate agent does not get paid unless a transaction closes. That alone fuels the myth that we’re motivated to close at all costs. But here’s what most people don’t understand:

A bad deal that closes is worse for my business than no deal at all.

Because real trust, the kind that lasts, doesn’t come from one sale. It comes from doing right by someone so well done; that they tell others without being asked.

Let’s Talk Money, Because That’s Where This Myth Lives

How agents are paid in USA real estate:

  • We are paid a commission, typically agreed upon when representing a buyer or seller.

  • We do not receive kickbacks from lenders, inspectors, title companies, or contractors.

  • Our income is tied to service, reputation, repeat business, and referrals.

  • All compensation must be documented transparently and legally.

  • Broker ethics real estate guidelines prohibit undisclosed payments of any kind.

The idea that a realtor gets kickback deals or secret commissions exists because the financial side of real estate is confusing to the public. When you don’t understand the pipeline, you start guessing at motives.

I’m not here to make you guess.

The Bigger Issue People Don’t Google

Most myths in real estate come down to one emotion: fear of being manipulated.

But let’s separate manipulation from motivation.

Yes, I want your deal to close, because closing means I helped you achieve something significant. But the mission isn’t the sale. The mission is the outcome: stability, opportunity, wealth, and confidence.

Anything less than a good outcome isn’t worth closing.

What Agents Won’t Say Online, But I Will

There are agents who don’t last in this industry because they treat clients like transactions instead of people. Those agents fade out. The market removes them naturally. Real estate weeds itself harshly and constantly.

Because the public can smell fluff. They can sense pressure. And they despise dishonesty.

And that tells me something important about the people Googling this:

You don’t want a salesperson. You want a professional advocate.

You want someone who can tell you when a deal is bad, when expectations are unrealistic, when patience is smarter than movement, and when strategy matters more than emotion.

That’s my job. Not cheerleading. Not convincing. Guiding.

My Personal Promise

Whether you're buying a house, selling property in Chattanooga, investing in commercial real estate USA assets, or simply trying to understand how agents are paid, you will never hear me recommend something just because it serves me.

You will hear me recommend it because it serves you.

A Word on Trust

Trust is earned in drops and lost in buckets. That’s why I operate with skepticism even for myself, constantly asking can I improve? can I communicate clearer? can I protect my people better?

That internal voice keeps me sharp & honest.

If you take nothing else from this blog, take this:

This business rewards truth. Punishes shortcuts. And exposes illusion.

I don’t need to make a sale. I need to make a difference.

The rest is just paperwork.
